Mylar bags are the packaging bags made by Mylar films- also known as BoPET. Mylar is a polyester film preferred for its high tensile strength, dimensional stability, reflectivity, transparency, chemical stability, electrical insulation, gas and aroma barrier properties.
Mylar bags are widely known for their lesser permeability towards gasses, so they are favored in the food packaging industry. These bags have increased freshness and shelf life and are a powerful barrier against moisture and gases, especially oxygen.
These bags are produced through the vacuum metallization process. The metalized layer (polyester bonded to aluminum) is formed through this process. This metalized layer works perfectly for food storage and has given the bags the status of what they are known for today.
Types of Mylar Bags Available
There are four types of Mylar bags, namely;
- Flat bottom bags
- Vacuum bags
- Stand up pouch
- Gusset bags
However, Vacuum bags are the most commonly used Mylar bags for their efficiency in storing food better and for longer.
